Charlotte County deputy dismissed following internal investigation

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla.– The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office let go of one of their deputies following an internal investigation, according to a statement released Monday.

An investigation into Mark DeHart began in January of 2021 following the suicide of inmate James Palmucci.

The Sheriff’s Office was investigating DeHart’s actions while working on the day of Palmucci’s death. According to officials, Internal Affairs staff determined DeHart violated policy by endangering a person or property and lying. He was dismissed from the program and will no longer be allowed to work as a deputy in Charlotte County.

“This deputy violated his oath and demonstrated a lack of integrity. The actions and inactions of former CDFC DeHart were unacceptable and do not reflect the high standards of this agency. Honesty is of utmost importance to me. Lying will unquestionably lead to your dismissal,”  Sheriff Bill Prummell said in a statement.
