Firework starts blaze in Cape Coral neighborhood

CAPE CORAL, Fla.– A lit firework was thrown from a vehicle driving in a Cape Coral neighborhood.

A Ring video doorbell camera captured the moment on Monday night just after 10 p.m.

After the vehicle drove off an explosion rocked the neighborhood and started a small brush fire.

The boom caught Ashley Nason’s attention, who was inside her home across the street.

“I heard like a firework and I saw it through the window back there.”

She ran outside to find a fire burning.

“I realized it was a fire and it was just picking up and getting bigger and bigger,” she said.

Immediately, she turned around and ran inside to get her father.

“She, in a kind of a frantic way, said ‘There’s a fire.’ And I was kind of in disbelief at first,” said Dan Drumm.

That’s when the Cape Coral dad jumped into action by grabbing a hose and bucket. He tried to put out the growing fire in the vacant lot across the street.

“When I first looked at it, it was kind of small and by the time I was able to get a bucket and turn the water on,it was probably three times the size,” he said.

They managed to tame the flames but there was damage.

“It’s so dry right now. I don’t understand why anyone would do that,” said Drumm.

The Cape Coral Police Department is still investigating who threw the fire work and why.
