DeSoto County home to new FPL solar energy center

DESOTO COUNTY, Fla. — When it comes to renewable energy, DeSoto County is the solar power host with the most.

Florida Power & Light Company recently finished construction of the new Rodeo Solar Energy Center. The completion of the project makes DeSoto County home to more FPL solar energy centers than any other county in the state.

The new energy center adds nearly 300,000 solar panels to the Sunshine State’s power harnessing grid.

DeSoto County was the birthplace of solar energy in Florida when FPL installed its first energy center “DeSoto Next Generation” in 2009. At the time, it was the largest universal solar installment and was commissioned by President Barack Obama.

The Rodeo Solar Energy Center can generate enough zero-emissions solar energy to power about 15,000 homes.
