FGCU expects sports venues at full capacity in Fall, masks optional

FORT MYERS, Fla.– Wings up and masks off.

“It’s certainly exciting to be able to get things back to a normal sense and feeling,” said Florida Gulf Coast University Assistant Athletic Director John Sinnett.

FGCU announced earlier this week, even before the CDC, that it would be changing its guidelines so that facemasks on campus were optional but recommended. The policy includes athletic venues.

“If they choose to wear a mask that would be their personal decision, but they will not be required,” said Sinnett.

The on campus venues will return to full capacity when the Fall sports season begins.

“We can sell that arena out from night to night and it’s just a big time atmosphere,” said FGCU Head Men’s Basketball coach Michael Fly.

Fly and his players welcome this news as they look forward to getting back the home court advantage that has made FGCU such a difficult place for opposing teams to play.

“It’s great in recruiting and it’s great as an advantage when the ball tips off,” said Fly.

It’s another sign of ditching our “new normal” for just plain normal.

“I think having the new CDC guidelines that just came out certainly bolster that,” said Sinnett.

“I think going out and being able to feel safe again, for yourself and for others, this goes hand in hand with that.”
