Former FGCU, Dunbar Star Working Towards WNBA Shot

As the WNBA tipped off their 25th season tonight one of Southwest Florida’s best is on the outside looking in after having her senior year cut short FGCU and Dunbar alum Keri Jewett-Giles is hungry for an opportunity she believes she’s earned.

For Keri Jewett-Giles 2020 was supposed to be a dream season. It was supposed to include a deep run with FGCU in front of WNBA scouts leading to her being drafted but as we now know she was never given that chance.

“I feel like I got robbed my last college season,” Jewett-Giles said.

COVID canceled her dream run to finish her FGCU career putting Keri in a situation she’d never been in before.

“I was like really mentally depressed because of what happened,” Jewett-Giles said. “I was asking myself like why my season?”

So she took the next route to getting her WNBA shot by signing her first professional contract with a team in Sweden

“So when I went overseas that was my goal. Show people that you can play at this level and I feel like I did that to the best of my ability,” Jewett-Giles said.

Keri led her team by averaging 17 points and 5 rebounds but again due to COVID her season came to an early end.

Once it was over she returned back to Southwest Florida and back to the gym where her WNBA dream started at Dunbar.

“It feels like home. Just the atmosphere and remembering when the lights were on and people were watching and winning so many games in that gym it means a lot,” Jewett-Giles said.

At this point she knows it’s not about people not knowing who she is but rather the right timing paried with the right opportunity.

So now she’s working out 5 days a week, playing in pickup games with WNBA players, constantly staying engaged with WNBA coaches and general managers. Staying focused and ready for an opportunity she knows she’s earned.

“What keeps me going is my family and just myself because that is my dream that is coming up and I cannot stop until I get what I think I deserve,” Jewett-Giles said.
