Swarms of insects invade Southwest Florida
COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. – Break out the bug spray! Swarms of insects have invaded Southwest Florida.
Tiny gnat-like critters have been seen, and experts said the sudden invasion is likely due to the rain Southwest Florida has gotten this week.
“When we see a real dramatic change in our weather, and over the past week we’ve gotten rain for the first time in months, and a lot of insects will be cued in on water and as soon as that water shows up, they’ll explode in numbers,” Dr. Billy Gunnels with Florida Gulf Coast University said.
Mosquitoes are another concern after heavy rainfall. It’s best to drain standing water near your home to prevent them from breeding.
