Eastern Pacific hurricane season starts early

While the tropical Atlantic remains quiet, the Eastern Pacific is already dealing with its first named storm of the season. Florida may lift ban on goliath grouper harvesting

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Florida may lift its three-decade ban on catching and killing goliath groupers, with wildlife officials saying the coastal fish’s numbers have rebounded from when they were driven to near-extinction by overfishing and environmental damage. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will consider on Wednesday a staff proposal to allow 100 goliaths to be caught and kept annually during a four-year period. One dead in Cape Coral motorcycle crash

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – One person died in a motorcycle crash on Burnt Store Road near Burnt Store Marina Sunday afternoon.  According to the Florida Highway Patrol a motorcycle and a car crashed on Burnt Store Road near Islamorada Blvd leaving one person dead just before 1 p.m. The Cape Coral Police Department shutdown both directions of Burnt Store Road around the 5000 block while crews investigate.  Police are asking drivers to avoid the area.  FHP is still investigating.  Count on NBC2 to bring you the latest information as it becomes available. Fire destroys car, ignites woods in Lehigh Acres

LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. – A fire ripped through a car and set a wooded area ablaze in Lehigh Acres Sunday afternoon. The fire started around 1 p.m. and left the car totaled, according to the car’s owner. Port Charlotte man dies after being thrown from truck and hit by car

DESOTO COUNTY, Fla. – A 20-year-old Port Charlotte man died Saturday night after he was thrown from the back of a pickup truck and hit by a Sedan, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The 20-year-old was riding in the bed of a pickup truck driven by a 19-year-old Arcadia teen with five other passengers on the shoulder of State Road 70 near NW Pine Level Street around 11:45 p.m. A Sedan driven by a 60-year-old Arcadia man was driving the opposite direction on SR 70 when the truck turned causing the 20-year-old to fall out onto the road and right into the path of the Sedan, troopers...

China says most rocket debris burned up during reentry

BEIJING (AP) — China’s space agency said a core segment of its biggest rocket reentered Earth’s atmosphere above the Maldives in the Indian Ocean and that most of it burned up early Sunday. Harvard astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell, who tracked the tumbling rocket part, said on Twitter, “An ocean reentry was always statistically the most likely. Publix to offer walk-up COVID vaccines at Florida pharmacies

FLORIDA – Publix locations in Florida will start offering walk-up COVID-19 vaccinations starting Monday, May 10, Publix officials said. Publix currently offers the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines. Vaccines will be administered via both walk-up and scheduled appointments as supply allows. Customers who decide to receive the Moderna vaccine will automatically be given an appointment for a second dose. Appointments can be made at publix.com/covidvaccine.
