Student driver critically injures father during driving lesson

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. — A 65-year-old Naples man is in critical condition after an accident while teaching his son how to drive, officials said. The man was teaching his 34-year-old son from Colombia how to drive, specifically how to park, troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol said. While being guided into a parking space by his father, who was outside of the vehicle, the son stepped on the gas. The SUV launched over the parking curbs and hit the man, troopers said. Cape Coral woman accused of crashing car into home

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – A Cape Coral woman is accused of crashing into a Cape Coral home Saturday morning. Cara Gritten, 29, is facing several charges including DUI with property damage.  Gritten is accused of driving off the roadway on SE 20th Court and smashing into a victim’s home.  The victim, Lauri Langone, said this is the third incident in which a car has collided into her residence. “You can’t even believe what it looks like inside. Lee County deputy saves sea turtle suffering from red tide

LEE COUNTY, Fla. – A Lee County deputy came to the rescue of an endangered sea turtle after he saw the animal in “obvious distress.” Lee County Sheriff’s Office According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Kyle Hargis sprang into action after a lieutenant noticed the turtle having trouble in the water near the area of Coon Key. 200-acre brush fire sparks in Collier County, voluntary evacuations begin

GOLDEN GATE ESTATES, Fla. – A 200-acre brush fire sparked on 14th Avenue near DeSoto Boulevard in Golden Gate Estates. The Florida Forest Service along with Greater Naples fire crews are responding to the brush fire. Crews battle 300-acre brush fire in Golden Gate Estates

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. – A 300-acre brush fire is burning near Dove Tree Street in Golden Gate Estates, according to the Florida Forest Service. Greater Naples Fire and FFS crews, and the Collier County Sheriff’s Office are all on scene as firefighters battle the blaze. A large plume of smoke was seen in the area. Nearly 100 sea turtle nests discovered on Sanibel & Captiva shores

SANIBEL ISLAND, Fla. — Sea turtle nesting season is starting to pick up speed and volunteers are locating and roping off more nests on Sanibel and Captiva shores. So far, turtle nest monitoring crews with the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation have located 70 nests on Sanibel and 25 on Captiva. “So far, the counts are on pace with 2019, a strong year that finished with 848 total nests,” SCCF Coastal Wildlife Director Kelly Sloan said. “It’s still too early in the season to know how things will shake out, but we are hopeful for another great year.” Last week, SCCF daytime tagging...

Second area of interest emerges in the Gulf of Mexico

There is a new, second area to watch in the tropics and this one is about 800 miles to our west. A disturbance in the western Gulf of Mexico, associated with a surface low pressure, is producing clouds and thunderstorms. Before this disturbance moves onshore into SE Texas or Louisiana sometime Friday, there is a small window of opportunity for marginal development.
