Investigators rule Charlotte County house fire was arson

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla.– Investigators determined a fire at a home under construction off Egret Place in Charlotte County was set intentionally. The fire happened at the end of February. The smoke damage was limited to the garage area. At the end of April on the same construction site, a truck was caught on surveillance video backing into a port-o-potty multiple times until it tipped over. The Charlotte County Sheriff’s office said there have been several incidents of trespassing and damage committed on this specific property. Neighbors we spoke to said they think the property...

Gasoline demand spikes in several states after pipeline hack

(CNN) — A growing number of gas stations along the East Coast are without fuel as nervous drivers aggressively fill up their tanks following a ransomware attack that shut down the Colonial Pipeline, a critical artery for gasoline. The panic-buying threatens to exacerbate the supply shock. As of 4 pm ET Tuesday, 8.5% of gas stations in North Carolina and 7.7% in Virginia didn’t have gasoline, according to outage figures reported by GasBuddy, an app that tracks fuel prices and demand. The Virginia figure was flat from 11 am ET, while North Carolina was...

Ship speed limit sought to protect endangered whales in Gulf

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A speed limit for ships in part of the Gulf of Mexico south of the Florida Panhandle is needed to protect the few remaining endangered whales there, environmental groups said Tuesday. The groups asked the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Fisheries Service to set a 10-knot (11.5 mph, 18.5 kph) speed limit in an area covering about 11,500 square miles (30,000 square kilometers) off Florida and Alabama. Shipping interests did not immediately answer requests for comment on the petition, which also asks NOAA Fisheries to make all shipping detour around the...

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Southwest Florida international airport (RSW) is breaking records after being named the fastest growing airport in the country.  “RSW certainly has been a beneficiary of a lot of traffic coming into this market here in the past several months. SANIBEL, Fla.— Ricky Williamceau and his buddies went out for an evening fishing trip on Monday. One of the men in the group noticed something in the sky and told everyone to look up. What they saw looked like a string of stars, one right after the other. “Woah. Everyone was kind of like ‘oh my God’,” said Williamceau. While it looked out of this world, the bright lights were actually part of Elon Musk’s latest satellite internet project called ‘Starlink’....

Cape Coral braces for potential gas shortage

CAPE CORAL, Fla.– The city of Cape Coral is bracing for a gas shortage as many people begin to panic buy gasoline. This stems from fear of a fuel shortage in some parts of the country which could increase the demand in Southwest Florida communities as well. The Colonial Gas Pipeline was hacked and shut down. Additionally, there is a shortage of certified tanker drivers in the country which could cause a delay in gas being transported. The city of Cape Coral is preparing for the worst and filling up its tankers to store emergency fuel. “It’s a big operation and fuel is at the...

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA – Most of us have it — the ability to unlock our phones with just a glance using facial recognition technology.
